Hormones 101
Hormones 101
Hormones are the body’s chemical messengers that travel through the bloodstream to tissues and organs and are a part of the endocrine system. The endocrine system is made up of a group of glands which include the pineal, pituitary, thyroid, parathyroids, thymus, adrenals, pancreas, ovaries, and testes. These glands make hormones and control most of the body’s major systems. Hormones affect our metabolism, appetite, mood, sexual function, growth and development, reproduction, and our sleep cycles.
Our hormones carry messages between our cells and organs. When hormones are balanced, they help the body thrive. Sometimes, however, hormones can be imbalanced—either too high or too low. These imbalances can cause health problems. Some symptoms of a hormone disorder include fatigue, decreased sex drive, irritability, and others.
Aging is typically associated with the decline of one's quality of life. We become sluggish, gain weight, have foggy memory, and other symptoms.
The goal is to remain healthy, full of energy, and mentally acute well into our 80s and 90s, and restore and balance any declining hormone levels. Understanding the primary hormones can give you great insight into their influence on your body, empowering you to make informed decisions for your overall well-being.
We want to commend you for taking control over your health and going on this journey towards healthy hormones. This is a big decision. You may have been struggling with many symptoms of hormone imbalance such as decreased sexual desire, foggy thinking, fatigue and/or weight gain, but it doesn't need to stay that way.
